Portia Modise, the only African footballer to score over a 100 goals, has quit the national team. This announcement was made by Safa on Tuesday.
According to the announcement, Portia would go on to do a coaching qualification, and she would also be a brand ambassador for South African football.
“We’re going to create a coaching path for Portia. We certainly hope she will pursue a coaching career,” said SAFA president Danny Jordaan.
On football, Portia said that the sport has changed her life for the better, and that through her achievements, she hopes other women would be inspired to reach for their dreams.
“Football really did change my life. I became a better player and a player someone can respect,” Portia said.
Banyana head coach, Vera Pauw said: “We will miss her but we must respect that there comes a moment that a player realises she has to make another step in life”.
She will definitely go down in history as the first woman in football to do the ‘impossible”. We wish her all the best.
