David Gatebe wins the Comrade’s Marathon, breaks the mens record
South Africa’s David Gatebe has won the Comrade’s marathon 2016 and shattered the past record set by Russian Leonid Shvetsov in 2007. David Gatebe ran the phenomenal race in 5:18:19 whereas Leonid Shvetsov had ran the race in 5:20:49.
Thus, Gatebe won the race by almost by 2 minutes faster than the previous record. It is a great achievement for David Gatebe, and he got R400,000 price money and also R100,000 additionally as he is a South African winner.
In this race, Ludwic Mamabolo achieved the second place by completing the race within 5:24:05 hours whereas South African fellow Bongmusa Mthembu completed the race within 5:26:39 hours claiming the third prize.
David Gatebe pocketed a cool R1,140,000 for his excellent performance which included R400,000 for winning and R400,000 for breaking the record. The prize money makes him an instant millionare!
Additionally, he also received R190,000 as he was the first South African home and an extra bonus of R150,000 as he was a South African record breaker as it was put up by Fikile Mbalula (Sports Minister) that any South African sports person would get R150,000 instead of R100,000 for exceeding the previous record.
All top 3 performers were South Africans . . . and for that I am super proud!
