ICC World T20 2016: Saint Lucia honours Darren Sammy
Darren Sammy’s success in guiding the West Indies to success in winning the World Twenty20 title did not go unnoticed. It was recognized by his native St Lucia after it was announced that the Island’s main cricket pitch would be named after him. This would be to honor him after captaining his country to the Twenty20 title.
The cricket ground presently known as Beausejour Cricket Ground, will now be called Darren Sammy National cricket ground. One of the stands in the ground will also be named in honor of a fellow St Lucian and Sammy’s teammate in the Twenty20 winning team Johnson Charles. This announcement was made by the country’s Prime Minister Kenny D. Anthony during a welcome reception to St Lucia on Tuesday. The victory over Britain in a thrilling Kolkata final on Sunday was historical and meant that the West Indies was the first country to win the Tournament twice.
Although there was a dispute between the players and the West Indies Cricketing board, Dave Cameron the board’s president said the board will meet the players next month for a dialogue and see how they can find a common ground in ensuring that the best players get selected for the West Indies teams.
