Unseeded Sloane Stephens is the new US Open champion
Sloane Stephens played Madison Keys in the final of the US Open on Saturday, who happens to be a friend of hers, and beat her, a moment that was exciting and perhaps bittersweet for her.
Her win is huge, especially given the fact that she is African American, and that she was unseeded. Venus and Serena Williams are the two tennis players that have represented us when it comes to tennis, and hopefully now Sloane joins them in making us Africans really proud.
According to CNN, Stephens said: “Honestly, I wouldn’t have wanted to play anyone else. For us both to be here is such a special moment. I told her I wish there could be a draw, because I wish we could have both won. I think that if it was the other way around, she would do the same for me. I’m going to support her no matter what and I know she’s going to support me no matter what. To stand with her today is incredible. That’s what real friendship is.”
On winning, Sloane didn’t think she even had a chance.
“If someone told me then that I’d win the US Open, ‘It’s impossible,’ I would say. ‘It’s absolutely impossible.’ My journey to get here, coming back, just being able to keep it all together and have such a great team behind me — this journey’s been incredible. And I honestly wouldn’t change it for the world.”
She walks away with $3,7 million prize money and moves up to number 17 in the world.
This win is a true testament to #BlackGirlMagic . . . African child your dreams are valid.
What a great weekend this past weekend was . . . this comes after learning that our very own Trevor Noah won an Emmy Award!
Congratulations are definitely in order.
