Struggle Icon Winnie Madikizela Dies at the age of 81
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the former wife of Nelson Mandela, has passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday, April 2. She died after a long illness . . . and the nation is in mourning.
Known as the mother of the nation, she with Tata Madiba fought for our nation against brutal apartheid. She is a mother, an icon that will never be forgotten, her memory will live on our history books and stories.
In 1990, the world watched as Tata Madiba walked out of prison, with mam Winnie alongside him. Tata Madiba spent 27 years in jail, leaving mam Winnie to continue the struggle while raising 2 young children under the constant harassment by the apartheid government.
She gave so much of her herself and her life to the people of South Africa and today we are heartbroken, because an icon has fallen.
She died surrounded by family and loved ones, and the nation is in shock as news of her death spreads. Tributes have been pouring in, with many expressing their shock, heartbreak and love .
