Thabo Mbeki, the first president to assume office after Nelson Mandela served the office from 14 June 1999 to 24 September 2008. His political history’s most controversial topic was with arms procurement which happened between 1996 and 1999, when he was the chairman of the cabinet sub-committee on arms procurement.

The committee put forward and approved the purchase of R30-billion worth of military hardware. The deal he struck led to allegation of corruptions against Mbeki, Jacob Zuma, Schabir Sheik and his brother Chippy Sheik, Trevor Manuel, Joe Modise and others. Still his net worth grew and his last net worth in 2015 was calculated at approximately R1 billion, according to sites like worlds richest people.

Born on 18th June 1942, he could not win presidency for the second term owning to being outvoted of the ruling ANC at the party conference in Polokwane in 2007. However, he managed to retail all payments, salaries and other packages that he was receiving as President for the rest of his life. The National Assembly passed a resolution which allowed him to have an annual pay increases basis recommendations by the Remuneration Commission. His medical expenses were also fully paid.

It is believed that he became rich by investing both on- and offshore in expensive whisky for quite a few decades. He supposedly has a fanatical love for expensive whiskey. His connections with powerful, influential and investment savvy people paid off.
